US ARMY 1919 BLUE DENIM PULLOVER SHIRT
BRAND US Army.
DESCRIPTION
Here we go with another beast from my personal collection!
The pullover shirt, or to give its real full name, Jumper, Working, Denim, Blue was the direct descendent of the WW1 era brown denim jumpers and was introduced in 1919. This same pattern would remain in use with the US Army until its short-term replacement with the M40 denim coverall, and after that HBT fatigue-wear.
This pattern was pretty much standard issue for any chore or dirty work, and was issue extensively to the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid-late 1930s. However, the pattern was not well liked, with many of them being ripped or altered down the front to create a jacket closure. They were also issued to German and Italian prisoners of war who would be given a wide variety of ww1-1930s clothing that at the time were considered to be surplus!
Quite rare and hard to come across, this beauty is a real holy grail for both military and denim collectors!
This specific shirt has also been featured in the book Rugged Style War Rome - WWII Era American Jackets From The Eternal City (published by Schiffer).
FABRIC 100% cotton.
YEAR 1920s - 1930s.
CONDITION Top condition! Killer fade. Denim is soft but still strong. No missing buttons. Inside pocket label present but not readable. It has a little (laundry?) tag on the neck and it comes with another similar tag that originally was again on the neck.
Once I ripped the back carrying a friend's bicycle (things that you should never do when you are drunk...) but I had it professionally repaired from a guy that sometimes also looked after some of the Levi's archive pieces in California. He used original 1940s selvedge denim and he did an amazing job!
